Building on the Safe Harbor case scenario, let’s change the decision that Cindy chose to make

Incident-Based Peer Review – Case Scenario
Building on the Safe Harbor case scenario, let’s change the decision that Cindy chose to make. Cindy decides that it is within her scope of practice to follow the father’s request to administer an experimental medication, an inhaled sedative, during the aura phase of a seizure. The medication has not been approved by the FDA in the US for use in children with epilepsy. One morning, the student’s teacher calls the clinic to report that the student is experiencing an aura. Cindy administers the medication prior to a severe seizure lasting longer than five minutes. The student quickly becomes cyanotic and stops breathing, Cindy instructs the teacher to call 9-1-1 and begins CPR. EMS transports the student to the hospital where the child remained for two weeks.
