2-1: Week 2 Discussion Forum
For this week’s discussion, select one of the options below. Please include the option number in the title for your post.
Option 1: Today, most language researchers believe that children everywhere arrive in the world with special social and linguistic capacities that make language acquisition not just likely, but inevitable for virtually all children. How much of the language is biologically determined, and how much depends on interaction with others, is a subject of debate among linguists and psychologists. How do babies learn language? Would Piaget agree with you? Why or why not?
Option 2: Bates and Associates (2018) propose that having a deeper understanding of the “mechanisms underlying health development across the life-span” presents the opportunity to successfully intervene in the lives of patients to reduce risk, especially in the early stages of development. For example, research has connected low birth weight to cardiovascular disease later in life. What are other issues which appear early in life and predict disease in adulthood? Describe the issue and potential interventions to reduce risk.
