The goal of this paper

6-7 pages, double-spaced, 12 point font, with 1″ margins
The goal of this paper is to reflect on Chaucer’s famous irony: the way he creates characters so that he can explore and question, and also make fun of, the world he lived in, the books he read, the ideas he encountered.
First, choose TWO of the pilgrim story-tellers. One of the pilgrims may be the one you did your presentation on. You are not, however, required to write on your presentation-pilgrim if you don’t want to. The most important thing is that you choose pilgrims whose Tales have a theme in common OR ones who are opposed in an important way. If there is no connection between them, it will be hard to write an essay comparing/ contrasting them!
Read over their descriptions in the General Prologue, their Prologues, and their Tales.
Think about the important themes associated with each teller and Tale. If you need some direction, look at some of themes listed here What do people talk about when they talk about Chaucer?:  Even more importantly, think about the ambiguities or questions that the Tales and the tellers raise.
Write an essay in which you compare and contrast your two pilgrims. Your essay should answer the question: what is Chaucer doing with these pilgrims?
Remember that it is fine (more than fine!) to assert that Chaucer was trying to do something and failing or that he didn’t know what he was doing but the effects are as follows. Just as long as you are specific about what the “something” and “effects” are.
Criteria:
Explicit and specific argument stated in the first paragraph of your essay. Argument should identify clearly what Chaucer is doing with these characters: exploring, critiquing, negotiating, anxious about, etc..
Argument developed in the essay. That is, each paragraph should make a point about what Chaucer is doing.
Effective paragraphs: one topic per paragraph, topic sentences that relate to the claim, evidence, and discussion.
Quotations from the texts (at least 2 from each for 4 total).
Discussions of specific details of the quotations.
