Please use the information provided in the “General Assignment Guidelines” provided in the syllabus along with the specific instructions for this particular assignment below. Please note there is a minimum 1,000 word requirement for the body of your total answers if writing a paper or 12-slide count with substantive content for the body of presentation if doing a PowerPoint.
There are two parts for this assignment with multiple prompts for each part to answer.
Instructions:
Choose a film OR a native case study from your film/native case study list located in the “start here- important documents” module on our course Canvas page. Please note: The film or case study you choose must be from that list in order to fulfill the assignment requirements. If you are currently taking another social science class with me or have taken one in the past from me, please choose a different film and different concepts to discuss for this assignment in this class. You may want to preview several of the films or case studies on the list to find one that interests you and that you will be able to extrapolate enough information to thoroughly answer the instruction prompts. Please answer the following prompts, citing several specific examples from the film or case study to support your answers to each one:
Part 1: Description of film or case study; application to power, privilege, inequity; and proposed solutions. Begin with the name and a description of the film or case study you selected for this assignment from the list provided to you in the “important documents- start here file” on our course Canvas page and if choosing a film, state the website or location from where you found it on the film list (for example, if you found it on the Films for Action website, state that). Include the main themes, points, important facts/statistics shown, etc, in your description. Using several statistics, stories, and situations presented in the film or case study as supporting evidence, discuss and analyze how the film or case study illustrates each of the following prompts below for part one:
1) how power, privilege, and inequity are or have been perpetuated (i.e., by continuing discrimination and inequalities), and
2) proposed solutions for challenging discrimination and inequalities and creating social systems that would be based on respect and justice for all (even if that is simply to start by promoting awareness that change needs to be made). For instance, if you selected the “Tribes and the Covid 19 Pandemic—Impacts and Responses” native case study, you could discuss the various ways that tribes advocated and worked to build trust to protect their communities despite historical and continued oppression that made them particularly vulnerable to the pandemic. Or if you write about Race: The Power of an Illusion, you could discuss how the political meaning of race has changed over time and how systemic practices such as redlining have created and maintained segregation and unequal access to resources and opportunities. Or if you write about Food, Inc, you could discuss how racial and economic inequality are demonstrated in the lack of access to nutritious food and how low-wage workers in food processing plants are treated, as well as corporate control of the agricultural industry and the impact on accurate information about our food, etc. Or if you write about “13th,” you could discuss the multiple manifestations of racism embedded in the institutional practices of prisons and the legal system. Those are just some examples from a few items on the list of native case studies or films you can choose from, but you will want to select the examples that are pertinent to the film or case study you selected from the list and you will want to select a film or case study that has enough information for you to answer all of the instruction prompts for this assignment.
Part 2: Application to three sociological concepts from your course material. Define and thoroughly describe three concepts of your choice from either your textbook or the following three files provided as course material for you: “Social Science Perspectives on Current Events,” “Systemic Racism and Anti-Racist Resources,” and/or “Definitions and Resources-Social Identity, Intersectionality, Discrimination” files found in the “start here-important documents” module on our course home page that relate to your chosen film. Some examples of concepts are stratification, power, privilege, inequity, ethnicity, racism, and sexism. Those concepts are just a few of the many possibilities, and you will want to make sure you select concepts that directly apply to the film or native case study you chose, so you may need to read ahead as your whole textbook as well as the aforementioned three files is fair game. I recommend thoroughly perusing all of those documents to find the three concepts you think best relate to the film or native case study you have selected. Please cite the author’s name and document title if referencing information from the provided files or page number/section in the textbook. Remember you are free to choose any of the films or native case studies provided on the list, so if you think your first choice of film or native case study doesn’t apply to at least three concepts from your course material, choose a different one from the list. Once you have selected, defined, and described your concepts, discuss specific examples from the film or native case study you selected for part one that apply to each of your three concepts using the following sub-headings for part two:
-Concept #1: This is an example template: If you selected stratification as your concept #1, you would state the definition provided in either one of the articles from the course files listed above or from your textbook, provide proper citation for that source, provide a thorough analysis of the concept you selected using the information from that source, and provide examples from the film or native case study you discussed in part one that illustrate this concept.
You would follow the same format for concepts #2 and #3.
