ASSIGNMENT DESCRIPTION:
This activity aims to offer students an opportunity to reflect on access and interdependence as it relates to disability justice. This assignment is designed to help you examine interdependence and its role in how the disability community is perceived within society. This assignment helps us explore ideas of independence in contrast to access and interdependence and the impact of these concepts in society. Think about it. Independence is a concept that most of us glorify from a young age.
Think about elementary school…your teacher praising you for completing a task “all by yourself.”
Think about college assignments…mostly individual assignments and assessments rather than collaborative group work.
Think about housing communities…there are neighborhoods where neighbors rarely interact, even to say hello.
Think about government agencies…many agencies work independently of each other in compartmentalized silos, resulting in inefficiency and waste of resources.
Societally, interdependence is not a commonly reinforced or endorsed concept. Many assert that disability justice cannot be realized unless society makes a concentrated effort to honor interdependence.
This assignment will ask you to reflect on, analyze, and dive deeper into what interdependence means and how it relates to access and disability justice.
