Background:  Not-for-Profit (NFP) entities are an
increasingly important facet of the US economy and Kansas in particular.  Chances are that you will encounter NFPs in
your professional career, either by working at one, auditing or preparing tax
returns, or volunteering.  As such, it is
extremely important that you have a solid grasp of how they function.  Much of this information can often be gleaned
from inspection of IRS Forms 990 and on the supplementary material found on
Guidestar.org.  You may use any data
source you find.  It’s often especially
useful to inspect the NFP’s own website.
This project is an introduction to a semester project you will encounter
in my Acct 610.  The Acct 410 project
will focus on the 990 Balance Sheets and ratios.  This is a high-value opportunity to use a
tool CPA firms use.  This tool usually
costs $2,000 per year per person, so I would encourage you to explore Guidestar.org
to the fullest during the semester, going beyond the requirements of this
project.  You must use Excel
and submit formula views (Ctrl + ~) of your worksheets.  The choice of NFP is completely up to
you.  I would strongly suggest you choose
a NFP of interest to you.
Applied Learning Experience:
This project serves as the Applied Learning Experience for
the Undergraduate Program in Accounting.
This project needs to be prepared as if you were delivering a professional
comprehensive report on a NFP to:
Ø
Senior Leadership within a CPA firm
Ø
Senior Leadership within an NFP, examining a
local and/or competing NFP
Ø
A Charitable Giving / Community Benefit
Committee at a corporate employer
Acct 410:
·
A five-year (you’ll need six years’ worth of
data) horizontal (trend) analysis of balance sheets found on the 990’s, as well
as five balance sheet ratios of your choice for each of the five years.  You need to use the six most recent years of
data.  Year-over-year changes for the
horizontal analysis must be expressed in percentages but can also include
dollars as well.  The year-over-year
changes must include every account found in their balance sheets.  It is not just a comparison of column totals,
such as Total Assets, although you can trend over totals as well.
·
Also, a seven-page paper (double-spaced: cover
sheet does not count; does not include any tables inserted into the body of the
paper, appendices, or citation pages) summarizing your findings (trends) and
your impression/evaluation of this nonprofit.
You are free to include tables in the body of
your paper, but this extends the length of the paper.  For example, if you have inserted two pages
worth of tables, your paper must be nine pages in length.  This paper/project is strictly based on your
opinion, considering the information you’ve considered during your analysis.
·
In addition, submit a copy of the first page of
each of the six 990’s you used.
Deliverables:
Assignment Basic Assumptions:
·
All materials must be electronically submitted
via BlackBoard in a single file, generally organized as below.
·
This file must be a single Word or .pdf file,
with all supporting materials cut/copied and pasted in as needed.
·
This single file cannot be a .zip file.
·
You cannot submit this assignment in an Excel
file.  You must use Excel to complete the
assignment, but you cannot submit your project as an Excel file.
·
If you do not submit your work in a single Word
or .pdf file, I will not grade it and your score will be zero.  If you submit more than one file, nothing
will be graded, and your score will be zero.
·
You cannot imbed files within this single file:
I will not click on executables or hyperlinks.
·
Basically, the rule is: I will open and inspect
one file only.
·
I will only use the Page Up / Page Down keys on
my computer.
·
If I must click on other links/files/objects of
any kind in order to view your materials, that will not happen, and I will
grade your effort on only what I can see.
·
If you use small fonts or images that I cannot
read, I won’t grade it, and you should expect your grade to suffer
accordingly.  This is particularly
relevant in relation to imbedding Excel worksheets – I have to be able to read
them.
·
Everything in your paper should be presented
from a Portrait print perspective: I expect to read it just like I would your
accounting textbook.
Be sure to place appropriately labeled Section Breaks
between the various parts of your submission.
Order of Content (Sections):
1.    Cover Sheet as found in the syllabus and modified as appropriate.
2.    Paper at least seven pages long (does not include anything except the paper; everything else is a Supplement / Appendix).  Not to exceed fifteen pages. Use ordinary and usual font sizes (twelve point) and paper margins (one inch).
3.    Ratios (five per year, five years, a total of twenty-five ratios).
4.    Trend Analysis of the Balance Sheets.
5.    Formula view of ratio and trend pages.
6.    Page one of every 990 used
Note: Can you choose company in KANSAS
Note: I need 990 form last 6 years
