This is an academic writing assignment. This paper must have a thesis, as per the Gordon
rule requirement. Remember, you will be revising this attempt, so make sure you get what you
need to get done, and don’t worry about perfecting everything this attempt. You must submit at
least 1200 words, and make sure to include a thesis. Make sure the paper is double spaced. I
want to be able to see how you are developing your ideas and how you are supporting your
thesis. REMEMBER: BE PITHY. DON’T WRITE FILLER YOU’RE IN COLLEGE.
The paper should begin with your first paragraph introducing both religions you will be
comparing. Be specific and clear about both. Your first paragraph must end with your thesis. A
thesis is an argument or a statement that you will prove throughout your essay. This essays thesis
must clearly state what axiom you are comparing [salvation, scripture, solutions for evil,
explanations of creation etc.]. This is the spine of your paper, so make sure it is both academic
and contextual.
I’ll give you an example, so you’re not lost. I will be comparing the founders of Buddhism and
Christianity, and their perspectives on salvation.
Your intro should look like this: MY THESIS IS BOLD, DO NOT BOLD YOURS
This paper will compare and contrast the founders of Buddhism and Christianity. Both
religions are founded religions, where there is huge emphasis on imitating the founder of the
faith system. Christianity is an Abrahamic religion that began in the first century CE, during the
reign of the Roman empire in Palestine when Jesus Christ atoned for the sins of humanity.
Buddhism is a religion that began in India when Siddhartha Gautama sought enlightenment and
reformed many core principles of Hinduism. This paper will contend that while both founders
claimed there is a way of salvation, the means of salvation differ entirely between the faiths.
This paper will prove this by first demonstrating that in Christianity the ego or the self does not
achieve salvation by being destroyed, but rather by is redeemed by grace through faith in the
work of Christ. Second, this paper will prove the validity of the posed argument by
demonstrating that salvation is reached in Buddhism through annihilation of the ego, through
following the eightfold path laid out by the Buddha. Finally, the paper will offer come
comparisons and contrasting points between both of the faith systems and the founders.
You must have at least 3 body points, just like my example did. The body of the paper will then
support your thesis following the track you laid out in the final sentence of the first paragraph.
Remember, you are to be academic about this so there is no space for your ‘hot takes.’ Save your
opinions for our class discussion. Describe the religious tradition as they’d describe themselves
to the best of your abilities. Support your thesis with every paragraph in the body of your essay.
Base your ideas in written research and remember to cite anything you pull out of a book, a
video, or an interview using MLA/APA/Chicago style citations. You must have at least 5
citations in your body, 4 of which must come from scholarly sources. Do not use long quotations
to boost wordcount.
The paper must have a conclusion paragraph that sums up everything you wrote. Restate your
thesis, and how you’ve proven it throughout the paper. Take a couple of sentences to discuss
further research that could be done at your selected religious site to finish the paper. List your
references in a bibliography on a final page in alphabetical order.
Remember: You must write 1200 words, double space, and have in text citations. Remember 5 sources minimum. Do not forget an alphabetized bibliography.
