The Argumentative Research Paper is a continuation of our “Research proposal and Annotated Bibliography” where you must use either the different themes we covered throughout the semester, or a topic of your own choice as the foundation of your research paper to formulate a research question. The purpose of the research paper is for you to engage in an in depth-exploration of your topic, and to create a specific, narrow, and significant main argument, utilizing scholarly sources as a focal point.
Format requirement: please use MLA in-text citation whether you are paraphrasing or quoting. Remember, your ideas must be yours.
A successful paper will have the following elements:
A well-developed/compelling thesis statement/argument (last sentence of the intro);
Supportive paragraphs with topic sentences;
At least eight secondary sources;
Quotes from secondary sources supporting your points. Please do not overwhelm your paper with quotes;
Introducing your quotes. Examples: According to Carr/Metz and Satariano, “…”; he/she claims/states/asserts, “…”, etc.;
Explanation/analysis of quotes;
Transitions—between paragraphs;
Proper MLA formatting (in-text citation and works cited);
Times New Roman, 12-point font, double-spaced.
