Any of the assigned readings we have on
the class calendar could apply to the topic area
you may have chosen to focus your research
efforts on. And based upon your research
proposal and annotated bibliography
assignments, you should have at this point a
tentative working thesis to proceed with.
Remember that for your argumentative
thesis, you are making an academic claim that
must be supported with reasoning and evidence.
Your research essay must deal with that support
in a logical manner that an academic reader will
appreciate. Feel free within the context of your
argument to employ various modes of
development as needed in your writing, whether
it be definition, classification, division,
comparison, analogy, or causal analysis. A
competent research paper will often employ
various composition techniques.
This is an eight-page assignment in
standard MLA formatting. However, you may
include two graphics in your paper, in which
case, your final paper will be longer than eight
pages. The graphics are limited to no more than
one-third of a page, each.
As an assignment of moderate length, your
paper from the beginning should reflect that with
more than a simple short introduction. Your
reading should have resulted in a collection of
material that will allow you to extend a formal
introduction beyond a page in length if
necessary. For our purposes, then, your one- or
two-sentence thesis statement will appear toward
the end of the first page or in the top third of the
second page.
While refining your paper in the last part of
the semester on your own and collaboratively
with your classmates in peer-review sessions, be
ready to show a formal outline of your ideas and
process of development to others. And remember
to logically apply transitionary devices between
the development of major supporting points
within your paper.
To remember:
❑ Minimum length: eight pages with no
graphics; or nine pages with the inclusion
of one or two graphics
❑ Graphics: center justified, no more than
one-third of a page in size, each
❑ Notes and Works Cited pages do not
count in the minimum length
requirement. These pages, as necessary,
should be considered appendages.
❑ MLA formatting requires a standard font
style (Times New Roman) in size 12.
❑ Do not use a report cover or slick binder
on your final paper. Your paper will use a
simple cover sheet in MLA formatting,
and the paper will be bound with a single
staple in the upper left-hand corner.
❑ One of the things about a research paper
that requires careful thought is proper
documentation, whether that applies to
in-text documentation or compiling a list
of works cited. For your own records
during this academic process, make a
thorough note for each source you use.
❑ The minimum number of sources to
use is seven, three of which must be
peer-reviewed (primary) scholarly
sources. The remaining four may be
secondary sources if the sources
themselves reference primary sources.
