For the last essay of this class, you’ll be creating a thesis about the subject of work. There are a few directions you can take this topic as you’ll see from the readings in this unit. Your goal is to use the essays we discuss in class to support your own argument about the role of work in your life and the value you place on it. To put it another way, I want you to write an essay in which you develop and articulate your own philosophy about work.
Consider the following questions as we develop this topic:
Have you ever thought about why society at large places so much emphasis on work?
Does work serve a purpose other than making money?
What do you value in a day’s work, if you value a day’s work at all?
What does it mean or look like to be fulfilled in your job?
Is there a difference between work and labor?
What relationship, if any, exists between work and community?
The four essays you’ll read for this unit all respond to these topics, and they’re designed to give you a broad overview of several perspectives on work and labor. You’ll use these essays as you build your paper, responding to the perspectives they bring up as a way to develop your thesis.
Paper format requirements:
More than 4 full pages in length (not including your works cited page)
A clearly articulated thesis
Must be in MLA format
1-inch margins on all sides
12 point Times New Roman font
Thorough and adequate use of at least three texts for supporting evidence
