We’ve viewed six films apiece by writer/director Spike Lee and Jim Jarmusch, investigating whether both directors qualify as an auteur. We’ve explored the origins of auteur theory by examining the foundational ideas of François Truffaut and tracking those ideas to Andrew Sarris, where the concept of auteur was appropriated and further defined in Sarris’ Concentric Circles. We’ve learned counterarguments to auteur theory, examining its limitations and contradictions. Now, you will take all we’ve learned and write an argumentative essay (a minimum of 2000 words, double-spaced), picking from one of the essay questions listed below:
1. To what extent can Spike Lee be considered an auteur?
2. To what extent can Jim Jarmusch be considered an auteur?
3. Is the auteur theory adequate when judging a director’s talent?
Refer to at least three films (for full credit) we’ve watched in class, utilizing the formal aspects of film analysis with examples of scenes and sequences from each film to support your argument. Also, use at least three assigned texts from separate modules as secondary sources for full credit, i.e., one article about sound, one article about editing, etc.
For primary sources, there must be detailed references to at least three assigned films in the course.
For secondary sources, students must make close reference to relevant assigned sources from the class related to the essay question, such as:
