Final Project: Social Welfare Analysis
The final project will consist of two parts:
A brief written analysis and summary to be 3 to 4 full pages (double spaced, 12 font, with your name on the top of the first page). Must include a separate bibliography with a minimum of two sources in addition to your school textbook.  Sources may include TED talks, newspaper or magazine articles, relevant movies, podcasts or books.
A class presentation (zoom) of your topic , what you’ve learned , your suggestions and it’s meaning to you. (Approx 10 minutes). You will be requested NOT to read what you have written, rather to speak from cue cards and /or using creative visual aids, etc. Feel free to present this as a personal issue from your perspective as well if that is applicable.
Topics: You will select a specific area of social welfare or social welfare policy (either current or historical) that is of interest to you, select relevant sources and references, and answer the following questions about your choice ( by number) :
Introduce your topic: what is the primary social welfare issue that you have selected? (Examples: homelessness in the greater Portland area; food insecurity in Southern Maine; increasing poverty as a result of the pandemic; discrimination in mental health services faced by the LGBTQ population;  the use of jails to house the mentally ill; struggles of immigrants to obtain legal protections, domestic violence and the feminization of poverty, difficulty in obtaining treatment for substance abusers in Maine, etc.)
What are the primary “outgroup(s)” affected by this issue?
Where (geographically) and when (time period) does the issue you are addressing primarily take place?
What are some of the historical or political factors,  personal values and policies that have resulted in this issue?
Your conclusion and summary: What did you learn? What surprised you? What steps do you believe would be needed to help resolve this as a social welfare issue on a micro, mezzo or macro
