Hello Everyone!
My internship has been focused on the macro aspect of social work. I have spent a good amount of time reviewing policy and looking at the necessary changes that need to be made. Last week, I was a part of a meeting that addressed a policy change that I helped review last term. This policy focused on protecting the sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression (SOGIE) of minors. This promotes social work because children need to be protected and if their SOGIE information is revealed to an unsupporting parent, it could cause harm. Taking in to consideration the harm that this could cause protects the well being and the importance of human relationships that these youth might have.
A mandatory reporter might have more information on a child’s SOGIE information because they are a trusting adult. A youth might not be willing to talk to their parents about sexuality or preferred pronouns due to their beliefs or that they would use this information against the youth. If the screeners at the abuse hotline are able to protect this information it can keep kids safe. This was a policy that was reviewed and changed recently. The Oregon Department of Human Services has been making a lot of changes to policy in order to meet the needs of the clients and Oregon legislation.
The policy was taken really well when it was introduced to the staff. There were issues with how that procedure was written that went with it. The staff were worried about getting it wrong and potentially harming the youth. I would reccomend that they change the procedure so that the staff is able to meet those safety needs of the youth.

I am working with the Comprehensive Community Support (CCS) program through the Blair Taylor School District I reviewed both the handbook for the school and the policy book for CCS. As reviewing these books I noticed similar topics that were focused on diversity, professionalism, respect and technology.
I found the technology section information the most interesting as it crossed the same in the social work Code of Ethics, school handbook and CCS policies. The policy discussed about proper ways to use the device itself for professional work and it discussed where social medica can and not be used.
If I was to suggest any change in the policy book and handbook, it would be in regards ro diversity and culture. I know we are in a small rural area with little diversity of race, but we have a lot of different culture and I feel the diversity policy could address how to allow each person culture be addressed.
