Unlike the limited police arrest and judicial studies, there are now well-documented accounts (although almost entirely North American) of the incarceration experience of the elderly. Unfortunately, the different studies define elderly inmates in different ways (over 40 years in Aday (1976) and over 55 years in Goetting (1983)). Fry (1988) found various ages at which inmates were classified as older – from as young as 25 to as old as 82 years. One could define older inmates as simply over 35 years because of the similarity of the effects with older persons (Fry, 1988). However, most studies adopted either 50 or 55 years – in some institutions, prisoners are given special attention at 55 years.
