Joe Louis defeats the Nazi Superman
During the first two decades of the 20th century, professional sport in the United States had undergone significant transformation. During the 1920s, college football, professional baseball, tennis, golf and boxing all had achieved levels of unprecedented popularity and acceptance. That decade was also characterized by a period of great economic growth and expansion as well as pervasive feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment at having been victorious in World War I. However, the decade of the 1930s was a period of world-wide social, political and economic upheaval.
When Jack Johnson was finally defeated 1915, many boxing authorities had vowed that there never again would be a black heavy-weight champion. Yet by 1938, a black boxer named Joe Louis had become one of the most celebrated figures in American life. For this essay, discuss at least three social, political, economic and/or cultural forces that led to Louis’ rise during the 1930s and 1940s. In addition, discuss how Joe Louis’s victory in 1938 over the German boxer Max Schmeling and his string of 25 successful title defenses either advanced or harmed efforts to end legal racial segregation in the United States.
