Grappling with Holiness and Sainthood in Byzantium and Today
For
this assignment, you will be participating in the Byzantine
construction of sainthood via iconography and hagiography. Please follow
the instructions below.
New saint’s life: using the
standard features of Byzantine hagiography discussed in class, write a
1-2 page (single-spaced) hagiography that justifies the “holiness” of
someone whom you think is saintly (real or fictional)
A new icon:
create an icon for your new ‘saint’ using the principles of Byzantine
iconography discussed in class. Feel free to utilize a range of creative
mediums as long as it still conveys the ‘sense’ of an icon (and not
simply a portrait/photo/image). A note on AI: while there are AI
tools that can generate icons for you, you cannot use them exclusively.
Here’s why, my main issue concerns how much the AI makes all of the
important decisions about the icon (esp regarding details, color,
symbolism) vs what you tell it to do. Ultimately I want it to be your
icon. So while I don’t mind you utilizing these tools to assist your
process, you can’t let it do all the work. And remember, you don’t get
graded on your artistic quality. Instead, I’m interested in the
decisions you make to produce an icon that captures and conveys (in your
mind) the “holiness” of your saint in the tradition of byzantine
iconography.

Hagiography = 50 pts‡
Voting = 15 pts
Total = 100 pts
† The icon grade is principally earned by submitting one. However,
icons that demonstrate a significant amount of work & creativity
and/or really capture Byzantine iconography will be rewarded.

The hagiography will be evaluated on the basis of how well it is
crafted, which means how well it structurally and aesthetically reflects
the genre of Byzantine hagiography as well as its overall composition
(clear organization, good prose, flawless grammar).
