Assignment:
The
work-in-progress for this report is towards your final essay (see below for
details). For the purposes of the
report, you need to demonstrate work-in-progress towards the following: (1) the
designation of a clear and workable research topic, with relevant background
and/or contextual information, that responds to one of the prompts below; (2)
the outlines of an analytical lens (or lenses) that may be used to illuminate
this topic; and (3) consideration of ‘the politics of militarization’ as
relates to empirical and theoretical questions of power. See below for details. For the purposes of
this report, you should organize your work according to the following
sub-headings:
(1) Essay Topic: In this section you need
to perform three tasks: First, you
need to present a clear and workable research topic that responds to one of the
essay questions as listed in the research essay section and/or one of the
corresponding prompts below:
(a)
illuminate how an object, social group
or practice has been ‘militarized’ – with reference to essay question 1 (see
below)
(b) Illuminate how a particular film, game, war story,
social activity or practice helps to construct geopolitical imaginaries,
identities and/or narratives in the service of
militarization – with reference to essay
question 2 (see below).
Second, you need to be sure here to provide a working
definition of the concept of militarization with reference to academic
sources. This, like everything, may be
refined as you develop your project.
Third, you need to provide background information to help
contextualise your topic.
(a)
For example, if you respond to Prompt A
above, please consider and address the following: To
suggest that an object has been militarized suggests that this was not always
the case and/or need not be the case. In
this section, you are asked to situate the topic in terms of its historical and
socio-political landscape: What particular developments will you be
exploring. What would you describe as the
phenomenon you are exploring?
(b)
If you respond to Prompt B above, situate the film, game, war story,
social activity or practice within a particular historical, socio-political and/or economic
landscape. What might we understand as
some of the unique conditions within which a particular geopolitical imaginary,
narrative and/or identity has emerged?
(2) Analytical Lens (or Analytical Lenses): What particular lens or lenses will you use to illuminate the power
dynamics at play in the militarization of your chosen object? Choose one or more of those we have explored
in Weeks Two to Six of this class: a
propaganda model lens, a critical constructivist lens, a gendered lens, a
postcolonial lens, and/or a racial lens?
Explain what your chosen lens or lenses may offer that others do
not.
(3) Conceptualization of Power: Explore
the politics of militarization with consideration
given to the following (and with reference to class
discussions and/or the academic literature):

Who or what benefits?
· e.g., a particular social group, norm and/or
socio-political order?
·
What are you assuming about the nature
and exercise of power?
· Is it more or
less centralized or decentralized?
· Can we locate it in a particular group or structure?
·
How does this differentiate your
analysis from other analyses of this phenomenon?
Research, Formatting and Other Final Essay Requirements:
1.)
Research Requirements: You must cite and engage with a minimum of 3 scholarly sources
and 3 additional sources of your choosing (scholarly or otherwise) for the
purposes of this assignment. Engagement
with required readings from the module is expected so, as part of this, you
must include at least two readings from the required reading list and one
reading from the supplementary reading list – i.e., as part of your minimum
total of six.
2.)
Word Count: This should be
provided at the bottom of the essay, prior to the bibliography (and should
exclude the bibliography, but not in-text citations).
3.) A Proper Apparatus of
Citations and Bibliography: The
bibliography will not be counted towards the overall word count.
4.) Formatting: Essays should be double-spaced and use
12-point font with reasonable margins.
5.) Submit assignment
via Moodle.

illuminate the power dynamics at play in the militarization of an object,
social group or practice: a propaganda
model lens, a critical constructivist lens, a gendered lens, a postcolonial
lens, or a racial lens? Explain what your
chosen lens or lenses may offer that others do not.
(b) Discuss how a particular film, game, war
story, social activity or practice helps to construct geopolitical imaginaries,
identities and/or narratives in the service of militarization. With reference to one or more of the lenses
explored in this module, what does this tell us about how power operates?
Also, be sure to define the concept of
militarization with reference to academic sources.
