Warren Carter (2013), makes the following claim about the historical Jesus: “Jesus was crucified as a rebel opposed to Rome’s rule” (94). Your initial post must explore two topics. First, discuss whether Carter’s explanation about why the historical Jesus was crucified aligns with or departs from how Matthew explains why Jesus dies. On the latter point – why Jesus dies according to Matthew – be sure to provide textual evidence and analysis to support your claims. Second, discuss how Carter’s argument about why the historical Jesus was crucified compares and contrasts with your own personal ideas about why Jesus was crucified.
