Primary Resource Paper
Grading Rubric
At this point, you have seen all of the primary resources. It is now time to assemble your
chosen documents to support your argument and interpretation of the Stono Rebellion. I’ve
added two prompts below to help guide your paper. I suggest picking one of these two as I have
seen a higher success rate with overall preparation and writing. This paper needs to be 3-5 pages
long.
Possible Prompts
1. Which primary resources seem most reliable in interpreting the rebellion? Which ones are
the least trustworthy? Compare your chosen documents and construct an informed
argument and narrative of the Stono Rebellion.
2. How did the legality of slavery change in South Carolina after the passage of the 1740
Act? Use the primary documents we’ve analyzed in class and examine the legislative
change to slave codes in South Carolina.
Make sure your paper is formatted in the following:
● Times New Roman
● Size 12 Font
● Double Spaced
● “Quotations when quoting a source.” (Notice punctuation fits within the quotation.)
● Footnotes to cite your source.1
○ Your footnote font size should be size 10. (This is the size difference) Your footnote should also be
indented.
● Once you’ve cited the book once in your paper, just complete your citations as follows,
“Stono, #”2
(See below for example.)
When citing your sources, ensure they are formatted correctly, like the one below. This is how it
is supposed to look.
Stono: Documenting and Interpreting a Southern Slave Revolt. United States: University of
South Carolina Press, 2019.
2 Stono, #
1 Stono: Documenting and Interpreting a Southern Slave Revolt. United States: University of South
Carolina Press, 2019. #
Be mindful of the following:
● If you are caught using Chat GPT in any way, you will automatically fail the assignment.
● If you plagiarize a source without citing it, you will also automatically fail the
assignment.
● If you have any questions about source material or where to find extra help, this is the
time to ask, not the night before the assignment is due. I will help create outlines,
research, edit writing, or anything related to the paper.
● You are in control of this assignment, and you have the opportunity to finish this class
strong!
● April 16 – Final Paper Due – Hard Copy Only! It must be stapled and handed to me
personally.
