Purpose: This assignment is intended to prepare you for a
conference with me to discuss your ideas and plans for your essay based on the
assignment related to “The Loss of the Creature.” You will use this assignment
to create a concrete basis for explaining what you want to do to me, an to
allow me to prepare for providing feedback during the conference as well. You
will not be given a conference unless this preparation has been completed. If
you have difficulties with it, you should contact me in advance so that we can
help you through them, not wait until the conference.
By now you should have read and written about “The Loss of
the Creature” multiple times, enough that you are familiar with his key ideas related
to Education. You should also have begun to connect your on experience in some
ways with his arguments about what education is and is not. If so, you are read
y to plan your essay.
Method:
1.
Read and think about the essay assignment, what
it is asking for in the big picture (a causal analysis that uses your
experience to challenge Percy’s theoretical views on education).
2.
Select two or three quotes from Percy’s essay
that you reflect a connection to your own experience as a student and write
them down.
3.
Explain the quotes in your won words.
4.
Describe the specific experience(s) that you had
educationally which connects with these quotations. You should think very
specific here (an assignment, a reading, a teacher, a situation, a classroom…or
learning outside the classroom like job training, life experience, parental
guidance, etc.)
5.
Explain the connection between the experiences
and Percy’s ideas. NOTE: This does not have to be a positive connection
(supporting his theory). You are welcome to refute, argue for a modification or
adjustment to his ideas if you want to.
6.
Write a tentative thesis statement that clearly
identifies the major idea from his text you are working with and what you
position on it is.
7.
Write any additional details, questions, or
concerns you have that might be useful to bring up during the conference we
will have.
