1. Discuss how The Matrix illustrates Baudrillard’s ideas—
Explain:
a. How our life/reality can be seen as a simulacrum (a simulation of something that no longer exists) e.g. Instead of talking about our feelings and experiences –authentic/symbolic interactions, we follow scripts with people behind cashier registers and talk about brands that help others make a profit from our conversations. These conversations simulate a human interaction, and are merely exchanges that create profit.
b. How does The Matrix suggest that corporations are sucking our energy and manufacturing our lives in ways that are similar to the robots who are using humans as a battery and manufacturing simulated lives for us via artificial intelligence/computer programs?
c. How does Quart’s book Branded explain how our identifies have been manufactured for corporate interests, leaving little of the personal identity that might be more true to being human, another simulacrum?
3. To what extent do you think we are stuck in our own matrix as Baudrillard seems to see it (where corporations are creating a simulated reality for us while using our human energy to produce profits)? Explain.
