Scribner, “1955,” “Willie Mae Thornton,” and “Presley Gave Rock Its Style”
In this unit we’ve discussed the ways that an understanding of context can shape and deepen, or even distract from, a text’s meaning. Both “The Management of Grief’ and “1955” are based, at least in part, on real historical events. However, neither is simply a straightforward account of these events, as the authors of both have taken certain creative liberties with their stories. With this in mind, for this assignment you’ll choose one of the text groupings above and craft an argument in response to the following:
In creating her story, what has Walker emphasized, added, omitted, or otherwise changed from the “real” story presented in the corresponding newspaper article? Why? How do the differences between the texts work to shape our understanding of both the story and the real-life events on which it is based?
Your essay should be well-argued and well-organized. Be sure to state a thesis and consistently support your ideas with specific evidence from both texts. Include a title that captures your argument. Format your paper according to the MLA guidelines presented in your style manual.
The documents added are two articles:
-Willie Mae Thornton
-Presley Gave Rock It’s Style
And the story which should be compared to the articles:
– 1955
Thank you!
