There are 2 options for the paper: a historiographic paper based on secondary sources (similar to a literature review), or a research paper based on both primary and secondary sources. Keep in mind that a primary source is one that was created during the period/process/event that you are investigating, while a secondary source is one created afterwards. Primary source papers often take more time to research. If you are pressed for time, do not have much experience in historical research, or are interested in a topic that can only be pursued in archival sources that are not online, you might be best opting for the historiographic paper.
The paper must deal with a topic relevant to the course and should be between 15 (minimum) to 17 pages (maximum) pages, 1.5 spaces, with a 12-point font of Times New Roman. It also must be a historical examination of popular culture in Canada, not a discussion of present-day developments. Those interested in the more recent past should keep in mind that the cut-off date should be (roughly) the 1990s to place their research in historical context. The topic may be developed from one of the course weeks. Alternatively, you can choose a topic that deals with the history of popular culture in Canada that we don’t examine in the course.
