This was an assignment where each group had to design their experiment. My group decided to test whether sunscreen (SPF 30, 50, 70) had any effect on the growth of bacteria when in the presence of UV light. Every group was given E.coli with a concentration of 0.00001 and spread it onto their Petri dishes.
Problem Statement:
How do different types of sunscreen (SPF 30, 50, 70) affect the growth of bacteria when in the presence of UV light?
Hypothesis:
If the Petri dishes were placed in UV light under different types of sunscreen, then the petri dish under the SPF 70 sunscreen would have the greatest percentage of bacteria growth.
The result came back and the four Petri dishes we had– one with no sunscreen, one with SPF 30, one with SPF 50, and one with SPF 70– didn’t have any colonies of bacteria at all. The picture is uploaded below. The data is also uploaded below.
We believe the reason for this is the duration and the distance the UV light was placed upon the petri dishes. We had the big light bulb of UV light extremely close to the petri dish, so that’s probably the reason the results were weird. Another possible reason we believe the reason for this weird result is that when spreading the bacteria, the glass hockey stick was too hot which could have interrupted the bacteria in some way, causing the result to have no colonies of bacteria.
