To begin an Annotated Bibliography, start with a research question.
Questions should have a manageable scope: should be able to complete this research in a couple weeks. Should be able to write a 4-6 page paper.
Scope: the size of your project, logically. “Right-sized fit.”
Scope too small (could answer with a couple of Google searches): What is the best food in France?
Scope too big (could write a book about it): What is the history of food in France?
Scope right size (requires a reasonable depth of research to find an answer that can be written in about 5 pages): How does French cooking affect the American diet?

Annotated Bibliography: 10-12 sources to make it manageable, each evaluation should be maybe two paragraphs. Source by source, list all sources in MLA format, then below the entry, Summarize the source, then write about its Credibility (How trustworthy is the writer? Why?), Validity (How trustworthy is the content of the source? Why?), and Relevance (How useful will the information be for your specific research project? Why?)
Note: this line of research will feed into your Argument Essay, which will be 4-6 pages. In this essay, you choose your “side” or opinion or claim. This will be your thesis statement. But the purpose of the Annotated Bibliography is to satisfy your curiosity and gauge the value of the sources you’ve found.
A good research question isn’t binary, not a clear right/wrong or good/bad. A good research questions matters to YOU! Maybe something you already know a little bit about. Maybe something you’re interested in and don’t know anything about. Maybe something you’d like to be able to teach or show somebody. Maybe it answers a curiosity you’ve had for a long time but never looked into. Maybe it answers why a certain thing is happening or is a certain way. Maybe it′s a line of inquiry into a problem that affects a large number of people. Here are my ideas: Research Questions Brainstorm:
How do ocean currents affect the distribution of marine species and ecosystems ?
What are the most effective ways to protect endangered species and their habitat ?
How do oil spills affect marine ecosystems and the organisms within them ?
I care a lot about oceans, the environment, and animals in general. I have always had a passion involving these things, so I would be interested to research more and write about this.
