WALL STREET JOURNAL/STOCK MARKET PROJECT
SPRING 2024-PART 2
PART 2: THE ACTUAL PROJECT
CONGRATULATIONS!!! You have been hired as my Financial Advisor. J
Now that we have made the investment decision (thank you for your recommendation!), you will follow that chosen stock and the DJIA for 4 weeks beginning March 25th closing values.
The daily (M-F) closing value for the stock and the DJIA (& S&P 500 or NASDAQ if you wish) will be recorded from the Wall Street Journal closing values every day. This data will be put into Data Table and then into line graphs at the end of the semester. The 4 weeks of data will be kept in a table format(preferably Excel).
Each week you will gather articles from the WALL STREET JOURNAL (HARD COPY digital) only, which will be used to explain the fluctuation in both the 1) stock value as well as 2) the value of the DJIA (and the S&P 500) (in other words, the articles in the WSJ should help you understand EACH DAY what you want to know about market fluctuations.
YOU WILL WANT TO KNOW:
• WHY the DJIA (and the S&P 500) has gone up or down and
• WHY my stock value went up or down.
You will accumulate this information for the 4 week period, making DAILY assessments of the stock and the DJIA behavior.
FINAL PAPER
At the end of the time period, each individual (or group) will submit:
• ONE (approximately) 3-5 page type-written paperexplaining:
A. what happened to the DJIA (and the S&P 500 or NASDAQ should you choose to include it) during the time period and WHY, and
B. how the overall activity of the market influenced the value of MY stock and WHY
C. Example…if the GDP figures suggest a healthy economy, the DJIA and S&P are likely to increase. This increase in the overall market might cause the value of my stock to also increase. This would be referred to as a macroeconomic influence.
However, if the company’s 1st quarter earnings report comes out and shows poorer than expected earnings, the value of the stock might drop. This has nothing to do with the overall economy but does impact my company. This is considered a microeconomic influence.
• The 3-5 page paper must be in APA format including in-text citations and a reference page.
• You will use the articles found in the WALL STREET JOURNAL (digital hard copy only..) as your ONLY source of information during this time period to explain why the DJIA and the S&P 500 moved as it did…
o you will then determine if the DJIA and S&P 500(measuring the economy as a whole) influenced the movement of my stock value (considered a macroeconomic influence) OR
o whether my stock value moved independently of the “markets” indicating some microeconomic influences were taking place (within the company or the industry itself). If you find some microeconomic influences in play, your WSJ articles should support these findings.
• You will attach a Data Table and corresponding line graphsof the DJIA values, (the S&P 500 or NASDAQ if you followed those indexes) that you have recorded.
• Your reference page will include only the WSJ articles that you actually used in your final paper.
• All of the articles that you have used in your paper will be included as an attachment WITHIN the document you upload within the Assignment.
• If you are unfamiliar with APA format or anything else in this project, the Reference Librarians are there to help (as well as the College Library website AND the College Writing Lab). There are several excellent links on the library homepage to guide you in APA referencing and in-text citations.
I attached 2 examples of previous assignments. the date the assignment started from is March 25 and will finish this Friday April 19. the stock i’m choosing to go along with the DJIA is the Apple stock. the articles añl have to be from the Wall Street journal. I’m not sure how many articles there are for the 4 weeks but if you could please add those too. I will pay extra if you can make and add the graph talked about in the instructions on excel
