In the introduction to our reading on Reconstruction, it is argued that the Reconstruction Era (1863-1877) “witnessed perhaps the most open and widespread discussions of citizenship” since the founding era. The era was, in the words of the chapter’s contributors and editor (Nicole Turner), a “moment of revolutionary possibility and violent backlash.”
Drawing on a selection of primary sources included in “Files>Assignment 1-Primary Sources”, your reading of Chapter 15, and our lecture and discussions on the Civil War and Reconstruction, explain the extent to which you agree with Turner et al’s assessment of the Reconstruction era.
