This essay is open topic—choose a text or group of texts we have covered in the class
that you have been the most interested in, and/or that you have had the most
unanswered questions about. (Talk about Voltaire-Candide)
• Remember, this is an argument-driven paper. Make sure you have a clear thesis to
organize and orient your essay, and that your paper seeks to develop and support
that thesis. This is not a report/summary.
• You may look at modern adaptations of the texts in the class, including movies,
video games, etc. However, make sure that your focus is still predominately on
the texts in the class. I still expect you to do close reading/analysis of the texts in
the class (see grading criteria).
• Please do not let the scholarly sources overwhelm your argument. They are being
brought in the conversation to help buttress what you have to say, to argue
against, to provide context, but this paper is ultimately your argument.
