The professional writing project will give you an opportunity to practice searching for jobs, reading job postings, and constructing a 1 page professional document. You will get to choose if you would like to craft a cover letter OR a resume. These skills will be valuable in your career. Resumes and cover letters are your first opportunity to construct a persuasive argument to a potential employer.
2- Prompt:
Research job/internship postings that interest you.
Select one job/internship posting that is related to your field of study. You should have at least 80% of the desired skills/education for the position.
Craft a resume OR a cover letter that follows appropriate conventions and creates a persuasive argument about your fit for the position.
3- Deliverables:
Please submit the following:

2.) your resume OR cover letter

4- Resume Essentials:
1.) Resume that is responds to a job positing that is relevant to your field of study.
The 1 page resume should contain the following:
-Resume objective or summary
-Work experience section
-Education section
-Skills section (if relevant)
-Achievement/awards/certifications sections (optional)
– Little to no grammatical errors
-The resume’s design should be:

Does not contain a photograph.
Use of color is strategic and minimal; it should make the reading easier.

The work experience should contain the following features.
Work experience is listed in reverse chronological order.
Information regarding work experience well-defined and includes: organization name, position, location and dates
Work experience should include bullet point list of duties/responsibilities for each position.
Each bullet point should begin with a strong action verbs (Make sure the same verb tense is used.)
Does not use “I,” “me,” or “mine”
Focuses on accomplishments rather than just responsibilities. Whenever possible, share the impact of your work.
Results are quantified (use numbers when possible)
Cover Letter Essentials:

Cover letters include the following:
Contact Information: Include your name, address, phone number, and email address. (Your contact info can be fictional for this class)
Date: Add the date you are writing the cover letter.
Employer’s Contact Information: Include the name, title, company name, and address of the recipient.
Salutation: Address the recipient by name if possible, or use a generic greeting such as “Dear Hiring Manager.”
Introduction (Aim for2-4 sentences):
Express your interest in the position.
Provide a brief overview of your qualifications and why you are a suitable candidate.
Employ one of the engaging cover letter openers from our lectures.
Body Paragraphs (Aim for 3-5 sentences per paragraph):
Highlight relevant skills and experiences that match the job requirements.
Provide specific examples of accomplishments or achievements that demonstrate your qualifications.
Explain how your experiences make you a great fit for the company culture or goals.
Conclusion:
Summarize your interest in the position and why you are excited about the opportunity.
Express gratitude for the recipient’s consideration.
Express your willingness to further discuss your qualifications in an interview.
Closing:
Use a professional closing such as “Sincerely” or “Best regards.”
