Final Essay Writing Assessment – Analyzing Artistic Interpretations Of A Text
Artists can create their own interpretations of literary texts. These interpretations can take many forms, including paintings, music, film, and theatrical stage productions—whatever the human brain can imagine.
Some narrative elements remain similar so that the original story is familiar to the audience. Other narrative elements can be changed to create a unique representation. For example, an artistic interpretation of a text could use that original text’s plot and characters but put a twist on the story’s setting or time period. The artist could also choose to omit details from the original story. Doing so could dramatically change the tone of a piece, for example, from dark to light, or serious to funny.
Viewers of artistic interpretations can examine the way artists represent the meaning of a literary text. An effective visual interpretation of a poem can enhance the audience’s own interpretation of or emotional reaction to the original piece. When you analyze different artistic interpretations of a literary text, compare and contrast the narrative elements of each one.
Example of Different Artistic Interpretations
Read the poem “She Walks in Beauty” by Lord Byron. As you read, closely examine the narrative elements of the poem: the characters, plot, setting, and tone.
Comparing Artistic Interpretations
When analyzing an artistic interpretation of a literary text, ask yourself questions like these:
How are narrative elements similar or different when you compare the original literary text and its artistic interpretation?
What is the importance of these similarities and differences? In this case, how do you make sense of the portrayals of the many different women of the video versus the one woman in the poem?
How can visual images interpret explicit or implicit meanings—or even just a different perspective—of a poem’s narrative elements?
Assignment Instruction: Final Essay Writing Assessment
Write a coherent, well-developed five-paragraph analysis essay in which you compare and contrast the representation of narrative elements in the poem “She Walks in Beauty” and the corresponding video. How do the images in the video change or stay true to your interpretation of the poem?
This activity should take about 90 minutes. Many standardized writing assessments are timed, so working within the 90-minute time limit can provide valuable practice for you. Manage your time carefully so that you can
analyze the video in relation to the text
plan your response
write your response
revise and edit your response
Your essay must include
an introduction
a claim
a conclusion
evidence from both the text and the video to support your claim
Write your response in a document created using your word processing software, and save the document on your computer with the title “Final Essay Writing Assessment – [Your Name].”
