If Gregor had been a stronger person, he would have been able to avoid all the suffering and alienation he endures.
Statement
I acknowledge that despite undergoing a transformation into an insect, Gregor displays more humanity and sensitivity than his family does. In “The Metamorphosis,” Gregor’s transformation into an insect paradoxically magnifies his compassion and sensitivity more than ever. Despite his grotesque physical appearance, Gregor remains anxious about his family’s well-being. He continues to worry about his sister Grete’s future, his parents’ financial security, and the burden he has placed on them due to his inability to work. His thoughts consistently revolve around their needs and happiness, demonstrating his inherent selflessness and empathy.
In contrast, the progression of the story reveals the lack of sensitivity and compassion in Gregor’s family members. Although initially shocked and concerned about his transformation, they quickly transition to frustration, anger, and resentment. They begin to see Gregor as a burden and a source of shame rather than a loved one in need of assistance. Grete, who initially shows kindness by feeding Gregor, eventually turns against him, suggesting that they should eliminate him for their own benefit. The family’s ultimate abandonment of Gregor highlights their insensitivity and failure to recognize his ongoing emotional and psychological struggles.
Gregor’s display of humanity, despite his insect form, sharply contrasts with the increasingly inhumane behavior of his family. This contrast underscores the story’s exploration of alienation, dehumanization, and the true nature of compassion.
