Two more influential and popular specializations in psychology have been humanism and psychobiology. They are very different, but they also have some unique similarities. One of the great aspects of studying psychology is that it helps us understand ourselves better and those around us. Over the years, we have always witnessed that some people struggle more than others and psychology is often expected to help with societal problems.
In this assignment, you will imagine that your favorite streaming service has hired you to create a documentary on a population that has been marginalized and/or oppressed in the history of our society. (For example, people who are elderly, those with disabilities, those living in poverty, minorities, undocumented immigrants, women, LGBTQIA+, etc.). As a psychology student, you have been asked to explain how psychobiology and humanistic theory could help address the problems of this population. You will interpret research to support original claims or solutions essential to real-world problems. An assessment of problems, decision-making, and justification of a point of view will accomplish the purpose of those producing the documentary and clearly relate the implications of the research on this topic. Additionally, conclusions will demonstrate a scope of research that makes meaningful use of divergent methods and strategies to better support students’ justification. Considering a child with disabilities who is struggling with problematic behaviors. I believe that a certain humanist theorist (that you would name) would emphasize the importance of giving that child unconditional positive regard, emphasizing the child’s worth, pointing out the child’s strengths, and expressing empathy and compassion for the more challenging areas. The child would help to figure out what is needed, along with the primary caregivers that support the child, thereby using a client-centered approach.
A psychobiologist (that you would name) would want to consider the child’s temperament that could be influenced by genetics and the child’s motivations. What is the child doing that may be a part of the child’s survival or a demonstration of the evolutionary survival of the child’s ancestors? To help the child understand the motivation of the behavior, could help lead to more adaptive, prosocial behaviors.
