By the end of this learning module, you will be able to:
Describe community-relations plans and how such plans can provide a foundation for strong partnerships.
Demonstrate your ability to translate a plan into a clear message to the school community about the value and importance of family and community engagement.
Requirements
A. Read the “Perspective” section below.
B. Complete and post a one-page summary of your School-Community Relations Plan.
D. Read and reflect on your colleagues’ plans and submit a reflective response.
For some administrators, engaging with families and communities is often a reactive exercise – done only when specific problems arise. In the complex life of a school leader, it’s easy to understand how such a reactive approach can develop. However, as shown throughout this course, proactive efforts at engagement can build the overall capacity of the school, provide solid support for times when things get tough, and, most importantly, play an important role in supporting strong student learning. As you complete your final assignment, think about the specific meetings, conversations, events, etc., that you would conduct as a new school leader in order to start forming meaningful and authentic partnerships.
