1. This is a Critical Analysis of the film. This assignment is not about your opinion of the work of art. Rather, it is a thoughtful analysis of the work where you discuss its historical context by thinking about how it relates to the larger world (i.e. consider economic, social, political, cultural, etc. factors).
2. You must cite, as support for your argument, at least three of the texts from those we read each week (Muñoz, Takemoto, and Gossett/Huxtable). I will attach the readings.
3. You must also conduct outside research for this assignment on your work of art. This means either quoting or paraphrasing the texts we read (or your outside research) with proper citations both in-text and with an accompanying bibliography/works cited page. You may use MLA Style as long as you use one citation style consistently and correctly.
4. Please refer to the Smart history ll (link below) that describes in detail how to compose this assignment. Additionally, I have posted an example of a well-written Critical Analysis for you to refer to as you write your own. (will add link)
5. A well-written paper will not only be structured and organized but it will also include an argument that you will prove throughout the paper. It will include an introduction with a thesis statement, paragraphs that prove that thesis statement, as well as a conclusion which does not merely restate your introduction, but which summarizes your argument. A well-written paper will also fully address the points below.
6. Please include the following in your Critical Analysis (you do not have to address these items in any particular order):
8. Image of the film. Details of the work: artist’s name, the title, the date, the medium, and the dimensions
9. Description of the work: This does not need to be as extensive as your Visual Analysis assignment but needs to describe the work in enough detail so that your reader has a good understanding of what the work looks like.
10. How does this work function? (What is the artist trying to communicate, if anything; what does the work mean, if anything? Think about the work’s relationship to the viewer, its surroundings, installation, etc.)
11. What are the economic, social, political, historical, and/or cultural implications surrounding this work? (Think about issues related to class, race, gender, sexuality, disability, etc.)
12. Compare/contrast the work with at least one additional work to help illustrate your point(s). This means both visual and critical analysis.
