Rough Draft Due: June 23, 2024 (On Canvas Through TurnItIn)
Final Draft Due: June 30, 2024 (On Canvas Through TurnItIn)
Purpose:
In this essay, students will select an essay and identify its purpose and audience; then, analyze how effectively its tone, logos, ethos, and pathos appeal to that audience.
Skills:
In life, many ideas are presented with varying degrees of evidence. While it would be nice to have the time to evaluate everything, people should at least be able to analyze the arguments that are most important to their lives. This essay is about examining an argument and determining what is effective and not effective about it for its intended audience. Use these skills to analyze important arguments presented to you in your life.
Knowledge:
The ability to determine the effectiveness of an argument and its evidence.
Task:
We are reading several argumentative essays with various appeals that support their argument. In this essay, examine how ONE of the following essays makes its argument:
“Violent Media is Good for Kids” https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2000/06/violent-media-good-kids-0/Links to an external site.
“Why Videogames Should Be Played With Friends, Not Online With Strangers” https://www.wired.com/2014/06/gaming-on-the-couch/Links to an external site.
“Opinion: When Nurses Are at Risk, Our Patients Are Too”
https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/12/opinions/nurses-strike-nyc-ghazalLinks to an external site.
Each of these texts the class has read discusses a specific problem facing American society and the way it functions. Using ONE of these essays, examine:
What are the writer’s (writers’) thesis and claims? (introduction)What are they arguing?
What is the writer trying to solve?
According to your analysis, is the argument effective? (thesis)
What is the audience? How do you know?
Look up the author and publication. Does this data reveal any biases? Do the author’s biases make their argument less effective?
Does the author have the appropriate credibility to make the argument (ethos)? How is the author credible or not?
Does the author cite sources that have the appropriate credibility to make the argument (ethos)? How is the source credible or not?
Do the date, place, or context of publication reveal anything about the story?
What kinds of logical arguments (logos) does the author use?Do the solutions address the problems?
What emotional appeals does the author use? (pathos)
Are the examples that the author puts forward relevant to their argument? Why or why not?
Evaluate these points, and using your analysis, form a perspective that evaluates the argument, context, and major points.
Be clear and concise. (Avoid wordiness and use thesis, topic sentences, transitions, etc.)
Be sure to cite the essay you use and any other cites you reference, though you should not do research for this essay.
Focus on how the article is effective or not for the audience.
Remember, do not bring in your own arguments into this essay.
This essay will be 1,200 words long and must be in correct MLA format.
Remember to include appropriate essay structure, including a thesis statement, topic sentences, introduced and explained quotes/paraphrases, and a restated thesis.
The Rough Draft is due on Sunday, June 23rd, through Canvas for my comments. It only needs to be 600 words long, though it can be full length.
The full-length Final Draft should be revised by Sunday, June 30th, through Canvas for the final grade. This should be 1,200 words.
