This week, we got to know community supervision (probation and parole), the difference between jail and prisons, and who exactly is sitting on Rikers Island. Take this time to reflect:
1) What did you think about the Rikers documentary? Did Rikers meet your expectations – does it deserve the “infamous” sort of reputation that it has? Did anything surprise you?
2) You’ve now seen some of the benefits and drawbacks of community supervision. If you were in charge, what would you do? Would you still find community supervision to be helpful? How could you change it to be more beneficial to the people subject to supervision? (BE SPECIFIC HERE)
3) Think about the concept of “net widening.” What can we do to ensure that young people/”first-time offenders” (I like to say ‘people who have had their first contact with the CJS, but I know this is long) can succeed? Why is net-widening a nuanced topic, and what can people in charge do better?
