Instructions
These writing assignments or analytic memos are brief (2-3 page(s), double spaced, 12-point font, Times New Roman). Memos must contain a brief summary (no more than a page) of the course material for the given week, as well as your own analysis of the given topic. You must use the sociological imagination to analyze and think critically about the social problems. Do not only provide a summary. In your memo you should discuss, write and answer the following questions:
What are the social problems discussed in the readings this week?
Discuss the role of privilege and/or power in the readings.
How does power and systems of power play a role in the readings?
Does race, class, gender or sexuality play a role in the readings? If so how?
Are there examples of what Lorde calls ‘master’s tools’ in the readings?
How does oppression play a role in the readings?
The memos should address all of these aspects and should be numbered when addressing the questions and prompts above. You should be able to connect and synthesize your sociological analysis from the course materials. There are multiple readings or chapters for each week, so you need to make sure you discuss all of the main points or overlapping concepts/issues discussed. Students will be evaluated on their brief summary and their depth of analysis that critically considers the course readings. You must have citations from the readings throughout your entire paper. In your analysis make sure you incorporate course readings from the previous weeks.
