One major theme in the Peoples Guide series of books is showing how landscapes are the product of struggle. We see evidence of struggle in each and every location mentioned within the book. As the creators of the Peoples Guide series have stated, “Each book will include sites where the powerful have dominated and exploited other people and resources, as well as places where ordinary people have fought back in order to create a more just world.”
In your opinion, which location discussed in The East Bay and The South Bay and Peninsula sections of the text depicts a struggle that is most significant to your life today. Your Argumentative essay must use A People’s Guide to the San Francisco Bay Area (only the sections on The East Bay and The South Bay and Peninsula), two outside sources of your own research, PLUS one example from your own life to support your argument.
*If you have an idea to focus on a location covered in one of the other sections of the text (like SF or the North Bay)
In this argumentative essay, you’ll use A People’s Guide to the San Francisco Bay Area (only the sections on The East Bay and The South Bay and Peninsula), two outside sources of your own research, PLUS one example from your own life to support your argument about the topic.
The essay should discuss the struggle that is depicted or represented by your chosen location and how that is significant to your own life. You do not have to have been to the location to have it impact you. Consider your own struggles or that of your family (both now and in the past).
The essay should include a thesis statement that is the central idea of your essay.
Your essay should use the sources and your own discussion to prove your argument (your thesis statement). Your essay should include at least two short quotes from A People’s Guide to the San Francisco Bay Area and at least two short quotes from each of your TWO outside sources. The short quotes should be used to support your own argument. A short quote is one sentence max.
Your essay should also include an example from your own life that supports your argument.
After areas with an example or with information from a source, remember to discuss the information/quote/ paraphrase with your own analysis of how it supports the thesis. Let the reader know why that particular piece of information was important to include to prove your thesis.
Be sure to cite any quote, paraphrase, or area containing summary with an in-text citation to show it is from another source. Note that an MLA formatted Works Cited page listing all sources is required for this essay in addition to in-text citations.
Be sure to use in-text citations to cite the source of quotes and information that is not your own. Examples of in-text citations: Brahinsky and Tarr state, “quote would go here” (71). OR “quote would go here” (Brahinsky and Tarr 56). Note that the in-text citation is really important as it will match the entry for that source on the Works Cited page.
Make sure to introduce the author and title of the article before you start referencing it in your essay.
Example: Rachel Carson in her book Silent Spring writes, “In nature nothing exists alone” (51).
After you mention the author by full name once, thereafter, he or she should be referred to by last name only.
This essay should be written and formatted according to MLA guidelines, which includes:
Double-spaced, 12-point font, Times New Roman or Calibri
1-inch margins on all sides
Your last name and page number in the right header
A unique title for your essay, centered at the top of the first page (12-point font)
Your first and last name, the course title (English 1), your instructor’s last name (Ulibarri) and the essay due date should be placed in the top left of the first page according to MLA format guidelines.
MLA In-text citations and a Works Cited page listing all sources.
