Writing a letter of concern for or support towards a particular policy or legislation is an effective way to hold leaders accountable in their positions.
Assignment Instructions: Complete the following steps to begin your Policy Advocacy Letter for this week’s quiz. For this quiz, you will:
Advocate for one of the following guidelines:
A pending healthcare bill at your local, state, or federal level

OR
Identify a healthcare policy at your facility, in your public health department, within a health insurance agency, or even one pertaining to pharmaceuticals that needs revision.
OR
Propose a new bill recommendation relevant to your current practice, community health needs, or personal interests that you feel is missing.
In a free-formed response, explain two reasons why that bill, policy, or recommendation is important.
Identify a leader or change agent (local, state, and national leader/legislator) who is appropriate to advocate for this policy change or adoption. Briefly justify why that leader is an appropriate choice for this policy change or adoption. Note: To determine your representatives, navigate to org (link)
Identify the official mailing or email address of this leader. Note: Your elected officials’ email and physical addresses are available on their websites. You can find out who represents you on the House (link) and Senate (link).
Additional notes:
You are advocating for approval of pending legislation (ie. a bill), acceptance of new legislation, or revision of a current healthcare policy. You cannot choose a bill that has already passed because at that point, it is a law. Advocacy for revision or repeal of an established law is not appropriate for this class.
Always refer to your selected guideline by its appropriate title – e.g., “Title VIII funding, H. R. 952, “Indwelling Catheter Care: Policy #NP.304”, or your proposed name of new policy/legislation.
The elected official or healthcare leader you contact must have the authority to vote for the proposed legislation or pass the new/revised policy. The mayor, governor, or assemblyman (woman) of a city would have no legislative authority and therefore would not be appropriate. You are going to contact your state or federal member of Congress (House or Senate) or the leaders within the context of your healthcare policy infrastructure.
Do not reach out to advocate for the proposed bill to the legislator who sponsored the bill. If you are advocating against the bill or for changes to the proposed bill, it may be appropriate to then identify the sponsor of the bill. If your state or federal member of Congress is the sponsor of the bill, please reach out to your instructor ahead of time to discuss this.
