Henry David Thoreau has decided to write a review of The Scarlet Letter (including “The Custom House”). What will he be likely to say, and what is the basis for your thinking?
The key to success with any of these prompts is your ability to substantiate what you say with specific textual evidence––citing page numbers or line numbbers––drawn from the editions of the texts that are named on your syllabus, and the texts by Bradford and Whitman that I distributed. If you can offer me what you think is a good reason for using some other text(s), I will consider it, but please do not proceed without asking me first.
DO NOT consult any secondary source (i. e., printed or internet commentary on any of the authors or any of their works) for the writing of this paper, no matter how tempting it may be to take a little peek on the internet. Just don’t. Work with the primary texts only (unless you want to use a standard, general reference source such as a dictionary). Anything that you read about a work would almost certainly have a discernible influence on what you write, and although accidental plagiarism may not be as morally culpable as intentional plagiarism is, the potential consequences for grades are the same. In any case, your viewpoint is what I’m interested in, not somebody else’s. And please, no use of Chatbot (a.k.a. Cheatbot) or any other such AI gadget. Submitting a paper that has been generated in whole or in part by such a “resource” would be a violation of MSU’s Honor Code.
