An argument essay makes a claim about a topic and supports it with good reasons. Topics that are subjective, matters of opinion or faith, or facts are not acceptable for an argument essay. In order for a topic to be arguable, it must reflect one of at least two points of view (should or should not). An argument must contain background information, convincing reasons, appeal to reader’s values, a credible tone, and an opposition and rebuttal.
In a 3-4 page essay, write a position paper that takes a stand on a controversial issue. Your introduction should present your issue, provide background, and state the thesis. Support your claim with reasons and address opposing views and refute them.
Also include appeals to pathos, ethos, and logos.
An argumentative research paper is NOT:
Everything available on a topic
One person’s view of a topic
Only the material that support a student’s preconceived opinion
An opinion essay or personal narrative
Since this is a formal argument, it must use formal language and rely on credible information. When writing your argument, use third person point of view (avoid using “I” and “you”). To ensure credibility, you will be required to obtain secondary sources through outside research (library, internet, databases).
A minimum of 3 sources are required for this essay. Sources can range from websites, books, online databases, magazines, encyclopedias, newspapers, etc.
