This section deals with Iggie’s move to Japan during the post-World War II reconstruction, and his life there afterwards. Pay particular attention to the roles of art, the types of art mentioned, and the cultural changes in Japan due to the American occupation.
Your essay is due by Thursday night. Your responses to at least two classmates, again offering one thing they did well, and one suggestion for improvement, are due by Sunday night.
1. Look up Frank Lloyd Wright’s Imperial Hotel, and write a short analysis of how it ties to Japanese art, its Aztec influences, and why you think it was such an iconic building during post World War II Japan.
2. Discuss the role of art in Iggie’s life in Japan, as covered in this section of the book. Give at least three specific examples of art object and the role they played in his daily life.
3. Iggie grew up in the house in Vienna, with art used on one way. He visited his Uncle Charles in Paris, where art had a rather different role. Compare and contrast the roles of art in the Ephrussi family in Paris, in Vienna, and finally in Japan.
4. Chapter 32 discusses the new role of art in Japan in post-World War II reconstruction, including the instruction American soldiers received related to art. Discuss the cultural bias shown here, and the lack of understanding of Japanese art and people. Give specific examples.
5. The netsuke have come home in this section, and as time passes Iggie learns more about them, and appreciates them in a different way. Discuss your understanding of the netsuke now as art objects. Use specific examples, looking up the pictures of the netsuke in the collection (if you Google Edmund de Waal netsuke you will get plenty of links to pictures of this collection).
