This assignment should be a minimum of three pages of text (not counting references, figures, tables, cover page, etc.), with a minimum of five scholarly (peer reviewed) references. The paper should be 12pt Times New Roman font, 1-inch margins, double spaced, and be in APA format (including references). For a paper to be considered a complete submission it must be a minimum of three pages of text. Anything less than three pages and a penalty (separate from other grading criteria) will be assigned reducing the total points possible for the project by the percentage the paper is short of three pages (i.e. a 1.5 page paper would have a penalty of 50% before grading begins). A minimum of three peer reviewed journal articles are required, any less than three will receive a deduction of up to 15 percentage points per article (also incompletely referenced citations are subject to the same point deduction). Further, references must be in APA format, or they will receive a deduction of up to 15 percentage points. The remaining point deduction are up to the discretion of the professor regarding quality of research, wiring, etc.
The topic of your paper is Expectancy Theory. This is a theory that states for individuals to be motivated three key elements need to be in place: Valence, Instrumentality, and Expectancy. Your job is to read multiple articles (and reference them in your paper) to develop an understanding of Expectancy Theory. Below is a good article to begin your research:
Ramlall, S. (2004). A review of employee motivation theories and their implications for employee retention within organizations. Journal of American Academy of Business, 5(1/2), 52-63.
Your paper needs to have two sections. One that reviews the literature on Expectancy Theory and explains the main tenants (key aspects) of the theory and how they relate to individual motivation. The other section needs to discuss how the theory relates to you personally and how a manager could use Expectancy Theory to increase your work motivation. In this part, be sure to give specific details on how the key parts of the theory (Valence, Instrumentality, and Expectancy) relate to you specifically. Be sure to include internal references and a reference section at the end of your paper that is in APA format. My favorite tool for locating scholarly articles is Google Scholar (scholar.google.com). To access these articles, you must first let Google Scholar know you are with UWF so you are not required to pay for the articles yourself. To do this go to scholar.google.com, click the three horizontal lines in the top right corner, choose settings, library links, then search for “University of West Florida”, check the boxes next to both UWF check boxes that come up, then click save. Then do your searches as usual. The first time you try to access an article, it will ask you for a username and password, just key in the same username and password you use to access you email.
