Conduct your own research on the issue of mandatory minimum sentences. Read through a few recent research
reports published by a criminal justice “think tank,” such as the Justice Policy Institute, Marshall Project,
Sentencing Project, Vera Institute, or similar. Use these to address the following: What is the status of
mandatory minimums in courtrooms around the country? How do they shape sentencing practices at the state
and national level? How do they contribute to “mass incarceration”? What reforms do these organizations
suggest? Discuss whether you agree with these suggested reforms and why. If not, say why not
Requirements
Each reflection should be approximately 750-1000 words in length and must incorporate at least three sources that
are academic, peer-reviewed, and relevant to the topic area. Use any of the recommended databases in Healey
Library’s Criminal Justice Research Guide to identify relevant peer-reviewed and scholarly sources. Your work
should strive to meet the professional standards of the American Sociological Association in terms of the writing,
citation, and referencing style.
Essays should contain an introduction, body, and conclusion. They should also be clearly organized with section
headings. Paragraphs should build on one another, flowing logically from one to the next. Craft a clearly stated
thesis that introduces your interpretations of the issue and links your argument to the relevant sociological literature.
Papers should be concise (i.e. get to the point). Briefly explain the relevant sociological concepts you are using
and/or media you are analyzing. (For Essay #1, I suggest you use one single theory and its related concepts to
explain criminal behavior in one or two prominent characters, scenes, or lines of dialogue.). The bulk of your essay
should demonstrate how the concepts you selected are relevant to/compatible with your perspective on the terms of
each prompt. The conclusion should synthesize your key points, discuss the connections between each section, and,
if applicable (as in Essays #2 and #3), make recommendations for social change or new areas of sociological
research.
Grading
Each essay is worth 100 points. Your final paper grade will be based on whether you thoroughly answer to the
questions listed in each prompt, use relevant scholarly and peer-reviewed sources to support your answers,
accurately define and apply sociological concepts, and submit work that is easy to read and free of grammatical and
