Drawing on Richard Newman’s essay “From Love’s Canal to Love Canal” and video documentary The
Poisoned Dream, write an essay (5-7 pages in length) that answers the questions below. You may also
draw on my environmentalism lecture if you find it useful to do so.
• Very briefly explain how and when Love Canal come into existence. When did the Hooker
company (later acquired by the Occidental Corporation) buy the land, and what did they do with
it? Who does Newman blame for the disaster? (Note that you’ll need to read very carefully to
answer this last question re blame, and that it’s not just one person or organization.)
• Who, demographically speaking, were the activists, and why does Newman argue that this is key
to understanding the historical significance Love Canal?
• What was the immediate short-term goal of the activists? What obstacles did they encounter?
What tactics did they use to overcome those obstacles and achieve their goal?
• What was the outcome for the residents?
• How did the disaster shape federal regulatory legislation?
