You will write one paper of 8-10 pages this semester comparing and contrasting two artworks. Do not choose works of art randomly. Write about two artworks that have some sort of relationship to each other.  These artworks must be from the time period and geographical area covered by this class. (14th century Italian art all the way to post World War II)
In writing an art history paper, always remember that you must first establish what can be perceived visually in the work of art, and then base all conclusions on what is apparent in the artwork itself. You may include historical and biographical information that supports what can be seen in the artwork. Use the following outline to organize your paper. The criterion for each subject is discussed in the grading criteria.
Introduction
Description & Analysis
Interpretation
Judgment
Conclusion

Thesis
Each paper should have a clearly defined thesis statement. Before writing your thesis statement, you should do some research. After reading your sources, write a concise thesis statement that tells the reader what will be addressed in your paper.
10
Introduction & Conclusion
For the introduction include the title of the work, date, artist or culture that made it, media (what it is made from). In the conclusion, state what conclusions can be drawn from the evidence given. Give a brief summary of the points that lead to that conclusion and any implications of the evidence given in the paper.
20
Description & Analysis
Discuss your chosen artwork. Identify the subject matter. Describe the form. Describe or name what can be seen using the elements of art. Analyze the relationships among the things described. Discuss the organization of the piece using the principles of design. (This does not need to be a lengthy, wordy section of the paper. Never begin this section saying ‘Now I will discuss the elements of art and principles of design.’). Include images of the artworks in your paper.
20
Interpretation
Discuss the meaning or significance of the artwork (the content) in light of your thesis statement. Discuss historical significance, cultural significance, or any use of the artwork. Refer to the description and analysis as support for your interpretation.
20
Judgment
Evaluate the work of art. Offer proof for your thesis. This section should include an in-depth comparison to one other work of art. Do not forget to mention any historical or cultural relationships between your chosen artwork, and the other work to which you are comparing it. (This should be a fairly long section of the paper.)
20
Sources credited
Parenthetical documentation uses correct MLA style. If the sources are not credited in the paper, the student will receive a failing grade due to plagiarism.

It is strongly recommended that you check other libraries for sources. You may request books and articles from other libraries through interlibrary loan. Ask for help in the library if you are unfamiliar with interlibrary loan. Also, please refer to the library for handouts about finding a good internet source. Your bibliography must follow MLA format. If you are not familiar with MLA format, please visit DBU’s writing lab for help.
Be cautious about using internet sites. The best sites are museum websites. Be sure that the websites you choose provide scholarly peer-reviewed information.
