I have found in my communication consulting work for businesses and organizations (including health care) that people often unknowingly identify cultural differences as character flaws. For example, the person who demonstrates a high indulgence cultural orientation (see Culture in the Workplace lecture) can be viewed as ″irresponsible,″ or ″immature″ by someone from a low indulgence culture. This assignment will help students begin to understand their cultural identity and viewpoints and develop a greater understanding of how healthcare professionals can communicate with greater cultural competence.
Analyze how their cultural identity influences their perception of patients, healthcare team members, and supervisors and the steps necessary to promote greater empathy for those who are culturally different from themselves.

Task:
After you access the lectures, write a narrative of 350 Words minimum that addresses the directions listed in Steps 1 through 5
Step 1: In one sentence, identify the foundation of your cultural identity by specifying your co-cultures of race, social class, gender, and ethnicity.
Step 2: Continue your narrative by identifying three of your cultural orientations (cultural orientations are listed on Culture in the Workplace Lecture slide 8) and explain how you demonstrate the behavior associated with these cultural orientations.
For example, if you claim to have a ″high uncertainty avoidance″ cultural orientation, provide a quick example to illustrate your understanding of this concept. (i.e. ″I like to have a clear understanding of what is expected of me and often ask my supervisor questions to clarify her expectations″).
Step 3: Identify 2 cultural orientations that Nashma (the woman in the case study presented in the video linked to the Cultural Competence in Healthcare document) demonstrated and provide examples of behavior associated with these cultural orientations.
Step 4: Briefly describe 2 Recommendations for Culturally Competent Healthcare Professionals (slide 21 of the Culture in the Workplace Lecture) Nashma′s clinical staff demonstrated after they attended their training.
Step 5: Edit your work for spelling, grammar, and punctuation. I encourage you to use the Editor function on Microsoft Word (remember, BC students can download a free Microsoft Office Suite by accessing their Outlook Email) to help you proof your writing. In addition,
Step 6: Place all concepts and terms from the text or lecture in bold font.
Integration of Lecture Content:
1. Concepts and terms from both lectures: Culture in the Workplace lecture and Cultural Competence in Healthcare lecture were integrated into the assignment.
1. Minimum 350-word length requirement met.
2. One-sentence statement of your cultural identity using the co-cultures described in the lecture was present
3. Student identified 2 of their cultural orientations (found on slide 8 of the Culture in the Workplace lecture) and provided brief examples to demonstrate their understanding of each cultural orientation.
4. Clearly identified 2 cultural orientations that Nashma (the woman from the case study presented in the video) demonstrated and used brief examples to demonstrate an understanding of the cultural orientations.
5. Clearly identified how the clinic staff presented in the case study demonstrated 2 of the Recommendations for Culturally Competent Healthcare Professionals (Slide 21 in the Culture in the Workplace Lecture).

1. Bold font was used to present concepts and terms from the lectures.
Editing:
