Review Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour”Links to an external site.
Read the selection. It is the shortest, short story that will be assigned. Do not breeze through it, however! It is very “deep!” You should definitely read it more than once.
Apply the “active reading” method discussed previously (see Academic Reading and Writing).
Answer the following analysis questions:
In today’s discussion, address the two analysis questions used with the Updike story:
Does it suspend disbelief?
What are the human conditions?
Give sufficient examples/details to support your choices. Then, discuss one of the two new analysis questions (they are actually not questions, but commands) that follow:
Identify the protagonist.
Sometimes called the main character, this is the character around whom the story is centered. It is not correct to say the “hero,” as often the protagonist is an “anti-hero.” An equally important part of this term is the fact that this protagonist must change. Be sure it is, in fact, a thorough change! Do not say the character was alive at the beginning and is dead at the end. Mere death is not enough of a change which must be emotional and/or psychological as well! Give sufficient examples/details to support your point. There is only one protagonist in the story selections for this class.
Response should include a minimum of three (3) paragraphs of 5-7 sentences each. Write until your point is complete.
Identify the antagonist.
These are the characters or elements that work against the protagonist. Each story has multiple antagonists. You need to choose four (4) that are dominant. Give sufficient details to prove your points. Remember, the protagonist can be an antagonist (sometimes, we can be our own worst enemy)!
Antagonists can also include: the climate, racism, age, objects, war etc.
