discussion, I would like to address a topic that has puzzled me since I began teaching this class a few years ago. I am a sociologist. You are all future nurses. We will likely have different perspectives, but we all experience the U.S. media in some way. Many of the most successful books, music, TV shows, and movies deal with the same themes that we study in this class. The subjects of violence, death, dying, and grieving are found everywhere in the news and “entertainment” we encounter.
The question that I would like you consider is this: As an individual, and as a product of your cultural experience, how do you make sense of the fact that we can see these themes in various forms of entertainment and often enjoy them, while the real life experience of thinking/talking about death, dying, and grief causes people such discomfort? There isn’t a right or wrong answer. It could be that the more muddled the answer, the more insightful it is. It is a sociological question, and like many sociological questions, there isn’t always a clean answer. I would like you all to give it some thought and respond accordingly. I would also like you to think about one TV show, movie, book, video game etc. that you have seen fairly recently that portrays death and dying in some way. Provide a brief description and your reaction to it, considering how it applies to this discussion. Use APA to correctly cite the media source.
