Network mapping software allows you to generate a map of the computers on all the LANs connected to a backbone. This activity involves installing a network-mapping program that will automate the process of scanning a network and automatically creating a graphical representation of the network.
This week’s exercise is to use a LAN network mapping software program to draw a diagram of your home network. You will complete the first portion (Mapping a Small Network) of Hands-On Activity 8A located on page 238 in your text. The software can be downloaded from the Internet by following the information provided in the text, or you can download it from the course Content area. If you run into a problem installing the software, try to “right click” on the install program and select “Run as administrator” from the pop up menu. Some computers have more restrictive controls on software installation and elevated privileges are necessary.
